Golf carnival will be a beauty

27/08/2008 9:47:00 AM
Everything seems to point to a great Spring Carnival this weekend at the Goondiwindi Golf Club.

With perfect golfing weather and the course in good condition, golfers should turn out in force for the two days of golf.

Quite a few visitors have nominated already which is a good indication of the interest in the carnival.

Saturday’s event is a 4BBB stableford.

Sunday is an 18 hole stroke with a huge array of trophies in A, B and C grade for men and women.

As well there will be nearest the pins and long drives on offer. A BBQ will run both days with nibblies on Saturday afternoon.

Organisers are confident that the carnival will live up to expectations and a good weekend should be had by all who participate. There are plenty of spots left on the time sheet at the Pro Shop, so give David a ring and join the action.

Saturday’s event was won by Greg Warden with 37. Greg is fast returning to his form of previous years after a long layoff from golf. Runner-up was Mark Everingham on 35.

Nearest the pins: 10th: Steve Baldwin (2.65m); 15th: Mark Everingham (1.15m); 18th: Steve Baldwin (5 balls – 2.60m).

The ball comp went down to 34, which gives some indication of the speed of the greens.

Ball comp winners were: Greg Warden, Neil Linton, Sam Coulton, Paul Cleary, Jeff Thatcher and Mark Everingham.

Saturday’s 18 hole single stableford was won by the ever-improving Paul Cleary with a nice 39 points,

Next best was B. Coote with 38.

Nearest the pins: 10th: Peter Cook (3.33m); 15th: Hugh McKinnon (4.96m); 18th: Mark Everingham (9 balls – 3.88m).

Ball comp went down to 34 and winners were: Paul Cleary, Luke Smith, Tony Ecroyd, Ron Harris, B. Coote, Barry Becroft, Malcolm Pegler, Peter Jamieson, Hugh McKinnon.

Friday’s Chook Run winners were: Bryan Meenin 25, Pam Glasson 24, David Edwards 24, Andrew Glasson 23, John McCosker 23, John Suttor 23, John Byrne 23, M. Heironymus, Greg Warden and John Stehr.

Nearest the pins: A Grade: Greg Warden; B Grade Don McKenzie.

Coming events: Saturday September 6: Mackenzies Home Timber and Hardware Monthly Mug. No draw.

Sunday September 7: A revived Combined Service Club’s Day (Lions, Rotary and Apex). 18 hole 3-person Ambrose (one to be non-golfer). Shotgun start. Time sheet at Pro Shop.

Sunday September 14: Presidents Cup Final. Mixed 4BBB stableford.

Wednesday September 17: Ross Bramma Memorial Day. (Vets).

Friday September 19: Tait Auto Group Day. 3-person Ambrose. Shotgun start.

Saturday September 27: Holden Scramble. Ambrose Championships in conjunction.

Notes to members:

Grounds Director John Suttor and his helpers have cleaned out the buggy shed and made it very presentable. It is up to members now to keep their section of the shed in a neat and tidy condition. Don’t leave your empty bottles on the shelves, it doesn’t take much to take them to the bin.

Make sure your cards are signed and your handicaps are on before handing them in for the carnival days, don’t get disqualified.

Some wise golf quotes:

What a shame to waste those great shots on a practice tee.

Golf is the only game in which precise knowledge of the rules can earn one a reputation for bad sportsmanship.

Thinking instead of acting is the number-one golf disease.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
