After some midweek soul searching, the Goondiwindi senior side has bounced back to some fine form with the 34 – 7 defeat of University.
After being defeated two weeks ago by the Condamine Cods, the Emus are now set for the run to the finals of the Risdon Cup with a forward pack that is brimming with confidence.
Despite losing workhorse Frances Hayes to an ankle injury in the opening minutes, the Emus turned in one of their most dominant displays this season.
Based on the solid front on defence of Jason Campbell, and the lineout work of Rob Anderson and the spoiling Andrew McPherson, the Emus attack gained more momentum as the game went on.
On a very cold and windy Toowoomba afternoon, it was winger Matt Tully who in the 14th minute opened up the scoring with the first of his double, touching down next to the posts after a well-rehearsed backline move.
Able to secure some good field position following a string of penalties against the Emus, the young and mobile University pack answered back almost immediately and posted their first points.
From then on, it was all Goondiwindi.
Bullocking runs from front rowers, Brett Corish, Doug McDougall and Rod Gordon laid the platform for the loose men McPherson and Smith to get stuck into their work.
Brendan Rice, having substituted for Hayes after a full game in the second side also earned praise from his teammates for his efforts.
The day however belonged to halfback Scott Jackson.
In his first appearance in the number nine jersey, Jackson was like an army General.
Barking orders at his troops, when he wasn’t leading from the front, he was hot on the heels of his forwards.
Jackson finished the game with two tries in his man of the match display.
The big play of the match was during the 58th minute.
A rolling maul that marched its way down the field was followed by some spirited pick and drives.
The result was a try to smart winger Sean O’Byrne who put a textbook in and away on his opposing winger.
It was only minutes later when centre Pearce Saunders cut the opposing backline to shreds that back-rower Adam Smith looked certain to score under the posts until a finger injury sustained earlier in the day stood between him and the final pass.
As the University defense tired, Goondiwindi scored six tries for the afternoon.
The blustery conditions allowed for only two successful conversions.
In other games, B Grade struck a resilient University team and was fortunate to come away with victory 12 – 5, while the U-20’s were narrowly defeated.
For the B’s, despite an early head clash that required some first aid, Trent Morris led the way for his team right up until his sin-binning in the 65th minute.
For the Pup’s, Lee Harwood was among the top performers whilst John McNulty tried hard in his typical gutsy performance.
