A Grade victorious 29-14
The senior grades have had a recent flush of talent available in all positions and this has provided selectors for all grades with an opportunity for some head scratching.
This had allowed them to select one of the stronger Emu’s teams in recent weeks.
It was the Emu’s style of play that defeated Rangers.
While the visitors chose to kick for field position, the Emu’s kept the ball in hand to let their mobile forward pack dominate through the middle.
Both Munzie and Smith were in everything.
US Barbarian Matt Tully made a welcome return to the fullback position, and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
He was able to link with his wingers throughout the afternoon to create havoc amongst the Rangers defense.
This week’s away game at Roma will see Queensland Country Captain Andrew McPherson make his first appearance in yellow and black for some weeks.
The other guaranteed selection will be fly-half McKinnon. This season he has kept the Emus on course time and time again, be it through his kicking game or darting runs.
His desperate cover defence is a highlight and a fine example of courage for his team.
C Grade defeated 12-17
Emus’ statistician Mat Dunlop has begun his assault on the club’s point scoring record after posting the first try of his rugby career.
It was some of the team’s older brigade that had a significant impact on the game.
Evergreen, Reggie McGrady showed he is as quick off the mark as ever.
He was able to stand up his opposite number and create space for his centre partner Col McDonald.
In a close game, the Emu’s had their chance to win but in the final stages, failed to ground the ball properly over the try line.
Stand in Coach, Hamish Wyllie also had a big game.
U20’s defeated 24-29
Flu and work commitments had the most affect on the scoreboard for the Junior side.
Whilst the Pup’s played a style of football that at one stage had the score-line at 21-0 in their favour, it is a lack of player numbers that is letting the side down.
Even with John McNulty and Sam Tweedy back from their respective stints in the top grade, the young Pup’s played the majority of the match with only thirteen players.
The winning Rangers try was only scored in the final minutes of play.
Coach McKenzie was extremely happy with the performance.
B Grade victorious 33-0
The B Grade had a relatively easy victory against Rangers.
The visitors suffering the fate of many clubs that find it difficult to field fresh teams for each grade during the away games.
The pick and drive rucking plays of the Emu’s forward pack were exceptional.
It’s an area of the game that Coach Kowalenko has been addressing over the last few training runs.
According to some spectators, Jeff Suhr, recently returned from the US Barbarian tour was largely responsible for the victory.
Some of his off field partying in Las Vegas may have led the big red head to put his hand up for an early shower.
Cameron Durbidge was in devastating form at halfback.
In a man of the match performance, he posted the first three tries to set up his side’s victory.
