A-Grade
The Goondiwindi A-Grade Boars suffered another home ground defeat on Saturday night going down to the Gatton Hawks 48-32 at a frightfully cold and windswept Gilbert Oval.
The Boars were their own worst enemy committing several basic and fundamental errors that led directly to three tries to the Hawks who gratefully accepted the points they were gifted.
These fundamental errors are known in the trade as “Coach Killers” and Master Coach Terry Aquilina did well to survive the night given the monotonous regularity in which they occurred during the game.
The Boars were primed for a big game back on home turf but soon found themselves on the back foot as the Gatton Hawks crossed for a try in the 5th minute to lead 4-0.
Goondiwindi man-of-the-match, David Wild scored the first of his three tries in the 12th minute and when radar boot Clyde Hickling converted the Boars had skipped to a 6-4 lead.
The Goondiwindi defence was containing the Gatton forwards in the middle of ruck with Jake McCosker, Kedron Gunn and Steve Coote tackling everything that moved, but it was on the fringes that Gatton had success with their back-rowers running wide and finding open spaces and they scored in the 16th minute to resume the lead 10-6.
David Wild again took it upon himself to attack the Hawks line and in a blistering turn of speed and powerhouse running he crossed for his second try in the 23rd minute to have the scores level at 10 all.
Super-sub Craig McKenzie joined the try-scorers with a typical burst that saw him spreadeagle five would-be defenders in a charge that was somewhat reminiscent of the great Origin coach Mal Meninga in his heyday.
The two teams headed to the sheds at half-time with the score in favour of the visitors 22-14.
The second half began disastrously for the Boars with Gatton scoring a try before Master Coach Terry Aquilina had time to resume his position in the coaches box and the Boars were down 28-14 in the 41st minute of play.
Some great attacking football from Clyde Hickling, Sam Greenland and Brodie Macdonald saw the ball pass through several sets of hands before finding Rah-Rah convert Mark Jekyll running into a gap and crossing for a much needed try to have the Boars trailing 28-20 with 35 minutes left to play.
The Boars comeback was short lived as ex-crowd favourite and former TRL Player of the Year Fred Walker took control of the match and in a twinkling of an eye he had scored a try and set one up for his team to give the Hawks a commanding 38-20 lead with only 15 minutes remaining.
The Boars again mounted some sustained and entertaining attack and when David Wild (64th min) and Kedron Gunn (68th min) crossed for tries the score had been reduced to 38-32 before the Gatton side retaliated with two late tries of their own to have the fulltime score at 48-32 to the visitors.
Three-try hero David Wild was a standout for the Boars and he was ably supported by Mark Jekyll and Craig McKenzie in the backs with Steve Coote, Kedron Gunn and tough as teak Jake McCosker outstanding in the forwards.
Gatton 48 d Goondiwindi 32 (David Wild 3, Craig McKenzie, Mark Jekyll, Kedron Gunn tries; Clyde Hickling 4 goals).
Reserve Grade
The Mal Peckham-coached Reserve Grade Boars continued on their winning way with a thumping 60-12 victory over the Gatton Hawks on Saturday night.
The Boars dominated in every facet of the game and the forwards dominance in the ruck area allowed the speed merchants in the backline to score at will.
The forwards were well led by noted hard men Henry Orchard, Michael Trebeck and Ross Jenkins Snr and their bullocking runs gained valuable yardage for the Boars.
The fleet-footed backs scored a total of 11 tries with Harold “Buddy” Brown grabbing a hat-trick, with Robbie McIntosh, Craig McKenzie, Carl Hippi and Derrick Craigie also amongst the try-scorers.
Under 18
The Under 18 Boars were defeated by Gatton 30-22 in an entertaining game of rugby league at Gilbert Oval on Saturday night.
The young Boars blew a 12-0 lead early in the first half to go to the half time break down 18-12.
Gatton pulled away to a 24-12 lead in the 35th minute of play before tries to Zac Hilton and Corey McIntosh narrowed the score to 24-22 with 10 minutes of play remaining.
Although they attacked unrelentingly for the last ten minutes, the young Boars could not breach the Gatton defence and a late try to Gatton sealed the match 30-22 to the visitors.
Best for the Boars were Carl Hippi, Wade Gresty and Jordan Jenkins.
