Twelve hours of Rugby League. What a great day of football last Saturday with the Junior Boars starting in the early morning playing against Warwick Suburbs in all junior grades then concluding with the Goondiwindi Boars seniors against Toowoomba Brothers finishing at around 8pm.
Congratulations to Don Turvey, his committee, parents and players of the Goondiwindi Junior Rugby League.
Four o’clock saw the Goondiwindi Under 18s kick off the action for the senior grades against Brothers. After the performance of last week it was good to see the boys play to their potential and with the addition of a few replacements turn things around.
Carl McGrady hit his straps this week scoring three tries and also Justin Smith and Wade Gresty scoring tries with Wade also chipping in with two goals.
The Boars led from front all game but a lack of concentration in the last ten minutes let Brothers off the hook and the game concluded in a 24 point draw.
A strong home town advantage and good player numbers turning up for the game, saw the Reserve Grade Boars soundly defeat the top of the table Brothers team with a score-line of 42 to 20.
With strong training sessions and good numbers at training this week, the Boars will go to Warwick confidently, but also, as with other teams in this competition, a home ground advantage will ensure that the Boars will be in for a hard night this Saturday.
The A Grade contest saw a real arm wrestle between the Boars and third placed competition runners Brothers.
In the first half the Boars were right in the game with both forwards and backs taking the game to the opposition.
Strong running and tight defence enabled the Boars on many occasions to play the game for much of the time in Brother’s half of the field.
Then through lack of concentration or poor options Brothers got possession which saw them capitalise on the mistakes made by Goondiwindi and convert them into points.
Brothers, also guilty of the same turning over of possession and the Boars converting to points.
The game continued to see-saw and eventually Brothers ran out winners with five tries and four conversions to Goondiwindi’s four tries and one conversion.
Final score Goondiwindi 18 Brothers 28.
If the Goondiwindi side maintain their concentration for the full eighty minutes and go with the right options in attack then points on the board will follow.
Positive things taken out of this game will put the Boars in good stead for next Saturday night against Warwick.
Once again, thanks to all the Boars players, sponsors, supporters and committee members for a most enjoyable night of football and we hope to see you at the next home game.
Also thanks and congratulations to Sarah Tucker, Goondiwindi’s representative in the TRL Princess Competition.
