Mighty Boars go down to Warwick

The mighty Goondiwindi Boars’ 2008 season ended with a 58-12 defeat at the hands of the Warwick Cowboys at Gilbert Oval on Sunday afternoon.

As with so many games this season, the Boars showed great courage and determination for long periods of the game, but were let down by poor ball control and silly handling errors.

More often than not, the opposition punished the Boars where it hurts most – on the scoreboard.

The second-placed Warwick Cowboys were stunned early in the game by the resolute Boars defence, particularly the bone crushing tackles from the ageless warrior Adam Wilson and his partner in crime Jake McCosker.

It took the Cowboys until the 15th minute before they were able to breach the Boars defence, and after an inexplicable Boars mistake from the kick-off, the Cowboys scored soon after to lead 12-0 with 20 minutes of the match played.

Rock solid defence from Brodie Macdonald and Kedron Gunn forced a handling error from the Cowboys and from the ensuing play the ball, Rob McGlashen, perhaps the most improved forward in the club, charged onto a sweetly timed David Wild pass and took three would-be defenders over the try-line with him to have the Boars trailing 12-6 in the 25th minute of play.

Unfortunately for the home team, this was as close as they came to the Cowboys who unleashed the sublime attacking skills that see them perched high on the TRL ladder.

The Boars were best served by dashing fullback, Hayden Everingham and centre Karl Tomkins.

Reserve Grade

The Reserve Grade Boars finals campaign came to a grinding halt on Sunday suffering a 60-32 defeat against the Warwick Cowboys.

Needing a win to remain in contention for a finals berth, the Mal Peckham coached team had no answers against the red-hot Cowboys.

In possibly his last game for the Boars, Craig McKenzie was inspirational and notched a hat-trick of tries, and young tyro Robbie McIntosh chipped in with two tries.

As usual, Henry Orchard was rock solid in both attack and defence and he worked well with backrowers Trebeck and Taylor.

Small in stature but huge in heart, Ramon O’Neill played well above his weight as did the versatile Shaun Swan, although he needs to fine tune his goal kicking attempts.

Under 18s

The Under 18’s found the top of the table Warwick Cowboys too strong on Sunday ending their season with a 58-12 defeat.

Rampaging prop Justin Broderick charged into his opposing forwards all game and he was backed up all game by Jamie Aquilina and Jack Worgan.

Tim Tribe was always dangerous at fullback and he combined brilliantly at times with centre Justin Smith and five-eight Kerrod Mailman.

In the forwards, the two Zacs, Hilton and Farrow tackled themselves to a standstill and young Joss Cleal threw himself into the bigger Cowboy forwards and sustained a couple of nasty tag marks on his neck for his trouble.

Super coach Cyril Mayberry, although disappointed with the lose, spoke highly of his young charges who battled on bravely all game and could not be accused of throwing the towel in and he looks forward to coaching them in the senior ranks next season.
