Big win for the mighty Boars

The mighty A-Grade Boars arrested their worrying form slump with a resounding 40-8 victory over the Oakey Bears at Oakey on Sunday.

A week is a long time in football and gone from Sunday’s performance was the disregard for possession, missed tackles and lacklustre running by the forwards that was so evident in the Boars previous match at home against Souths.

While the players deserve all the credit for the improved showing on the field, master Coach Terry Aquilina should be congratulated for his efforts on the training paddock and his continued belief in his young charges’ ability.

Playing in gale-like conditions, the Boars handled the tricky conditions better through the astute kicking game of “Rah-Rah” convert David Wild and dominated field position with “Wildy” kicking several 40-20s to constantly have the Oakey team on the backfoot.

Brilliant centre Sam Greenland was at his devastating best and notched a hat-trick of tries and it is amazing that no NRL talent scouts have picked up this rugby league prodigy.

A man-of-the- match performance by young halfback Brodie Macdonald was the catalyst behind most of the Boars’ attacking forays on the Oakey defence and his tackling was top shelf and reminiscent of a young Alfie Langer.

Clyde Hickling, Tim “Cronulla” Sutherland, Michael Walsh and Mark Jekyll were outstanding in the backline and benefitted greatly by the yardage gained by David Wild and the sublime passing game of Brodie Macdonald.

In the forwards none played better than prop Michael Offerdahl who charged into the Oakey defence like a man possessed and see him register his best game in the treasured Boars’ jumper .

The big red-headed prop was everywhere in attack and defence and he showed plenty of heart in a stirring 80 minute performance that has seen him cement his place in the Boars’ top side.

Once again it was the triumvirate of messers Gunn, McCosker and Everingham that denied the Oakey attack any leeway with some bone-crushing defence in the middle of the ruck to stymie the life out of the home teams attacking options.

Young Thomas Crocker, Robert McGlashen and the ageless warhorse Adam Wilson all performed admirably when called upon.

The Boars have this week off due to the Madsen Rasmussen trophy game being played in Toowoomba and the Gilbert Oval fans will be able to see the mighty Boars in action the following weekend against arch country rivals the Gatton Hawks.

Reserve Grade.

The Reserve Grade Boars continued on their winning way with a hard fought 32-12 victory over the Oakey Bears on Sunday to maintain their position in the top five.

The Malcolm “Son Boy” Peckham-coached side ran in six tries with all of them scored by the speedy backline.

The game was won in the forwards with the front row of Michael Trebeck, Michael Walsh and Troy Adams providing the go-forward for the Boars with some powerhouse charges in the middle of the ruck.

Diminutive second-rowers Michael Smith and Ramon O’Neill, perhaps the smallest second row pairing in the history of the game, showed size does not matter with a dominant display in both attack and defence.

Lock forward Michael Taylor was also in everything and he was able to combine brilliantly with centres Jordan Jenkins and Carl Hippi to create many try scoring opportunities for the Boars.

Among the try scorers for the Boars were Clint Raymond, AJ McGrady, Derrick Craigie, Harold “Buddy” Brown, Robbie McIntosh and a rejuvenated Mal Peckham who had just spent a week in the hills around Kyogle trying to rekindle his spirit for the arduous second round of football that awaits his team.

Under 18.

A much improved performance in all facets of play was not quite enough to secure victory for the Goondiwindi Under 18 Boars on Sunday at Oakey.

The young Boars were defeated, but by no means disgraced, in going down 16-4 to the highly ranked Oakey Bears outfit.

Jordan Jenkins was again one of the best on field and was rewarded with a well deserved try.

Best for the Boars were forwards Cooper Melon, Corey McIntosh and Reg McIntosh whilst Reece Brydon and Jack Worgan shown like beacons in the backline.
