Racing round the ridges

Haradsun may have won his Group One at Royal Ascot last week but if the race was run in Australia he would have been disqualified and rider and connections given a long holiday.

Haradsun’s stable mate Honoured Guest set a strong pace along the rail with Haradsun bowling along behind him. When the time came for Haradsun to begin his run the rider of Honoured Guest looked over his shoulder to see where Hadarsun was then pulled his mount away from the rail giving Hararsus a saloon passage to the front and the horse fell in by about a half length.

Melbourne Chief Steward Des Gleeson said in Australia there is no doubt the horse would have been disqualified along with both riders and trainer.

Rumours say there is no love lost between Brisbane racecallers Wayne Wilson and Alan Thomas. Apparently when both shared the same broadcast box at Eagle Farm recently there were some heated exchanges.

A week ago the races were at Ipswich which has two separate broadcasting boxes so everything was ok but last Saturday it was back to Eagle Farm. Some wags are suggesting that a couple of sets of boxing gloves were provided with the binoculars.

The winner of the Stayers’ Cup at Rosehill last Saturday was a neddy named Get Up Jude and he has caused most people who have come into contact with him during his four years on this earth to suffer severe heart palpitations.

As a foal and young horse he was an absolute ratbag. He has numerous scars on all legs, the result of suddenly taking off at full pelt and running into things such as trees and barbed wire fences. His most serious accident was the time he decided to take off at full gallop and ran straight into a fence and impaled himself on a star picket which went into his chest, narrowly missing his heart.

A lady trainer Elsie Green got him going and onto a race track before handing him over to another female trainer Diane Poidevin-Laine. After winning on the country circuit Diane brought him into the city a fortnight ago and he steamed home to win at Randwick at the succulent odds of 25/1

Backed up again on Saturday in open company in the Stayers’ Cup.

This time the pro punters labeled him and he started favourite. The pros along with trainer Diane were suffering severe heart palpitations as Get Up Jude dropped out a distant last and his galloping action was all over the place, so much so, trainer Diane thought he had broken down. ( Maybe he was dodging imaginary steel pickets ). Still a distant last coming to the turn, jockey Danny Nikolic pulled the horse out wide.

Whether Get Up Jade looked down the long Rosehill straight and saw there were no trees, fences or steel pickets in the way we’ll never know, but he suddenly grabbed the bit, and took off. He flew past horse after horse and won running away.

The pro punters staggered off to the bar for a few heart starters, jockey Nikolic uttered the line all winning jockeys say to impress connections, “ I was always confident,” trainer Diane said, “We’ll give him one more run then turn him out and bring him back for the Melbourne Cup.”

Racing writers bit on their pencils to stifle the guffaws. But hang on a minute, this nag has now had 10 starts for five wins and two placings. When he was spread-eagled out on the ground with a steel picket through his chest if someone had said this horse will win the Stayers’ Cup at Rosehill one day, you would have tipped him into a padded van and taken him straight to the funny farm.

In this wonderful life of ours we can all have beautiful future dreams and Diane’s is to win a Melbourne Cup. Sadly she will not be able to dream too often as most of her nights will be sleepless as she tosses and turns wondering what her horse is getting up to in the spelling paddock and then pre-race day just how much of the race will he spend performing a spot of rap dancing before consenting to gallop.

( Get Up Jude will have his final start this campaign Sat week in the $100,000 Winter Cup at Rosehill. If you get the opportunity have a look at the race, no one, especially the horse ,can anticipate what will happen)

“Wives can be cruel,” Rather Rotund Resident of Baker Street confided to Drinking Partner. “We were at the marriage counsellors and he asked me was I a light drinker and the Missus piped up and said, “He sure is, as soon as it’s light he drinks.”

22/09/2008 | Once upon a time finding a mate was easy. It was a childhood sweetheart, someone from church or if you were ugly, the other ugly person.
