18/06/2008 11:03:00 AM
The third round of the Norm Hilderson Knockout Matchplay was completed on Saturday at the Goondiwindi golf course and some surprises were produced.

Peter Jamieson beat Darryl Murphy 1-up; Richard Glasson beat his more fancied opponent, the experienced Mark Everingham 2-up; Greg Warden had a close tussle with David Raymond to win 1-up; Don Frith beat Murray Bishop 2-up; Shaun Brennan steamrolled Tom Gibson 5 and 4; Pablo Vega won on the 18th against Nathan Jorgensen to finish 1-up; Forfeits went to Todd McLean against Barry Bentley and Dominic Cherry against Graham Smith.

In the fourth round, the semi-finals are to be played on or before Saturday, July 19 and the draw is: Peter Jamieson v Richard Glasson; Greg Warden v Don Frith; Shaun Brennan v Dom Cherry; Todd McLean v Pablo Vega. The games must be played on a competition day and members will follow the results with interest.

In the Matchplay Championships the A grade is coming along nicely. There haven’t been many matches played in B grade, so players will have to complete their games by next Saturday, June 21.

The mixed 4BBB stableford for the President’s Cup was a mighty disappointment. The game has been changed this year to encourage greater participation. There is no matchplay involved and winners will be the highest score in each round. So if players missed this round they are still “alive” and can play in rounds to come, as the best scores are what counts. So come on all you husband and wife combinations, let’s see a good roll-up for the next round which is on Sunday, July 13. See if we can have a really good field. Winners this round were Richard and Alison Siddins with 43 points.

Wednesday’s Veterans comp was won by Peter Ward and Bill Sheppard with 26 points.

Next best were John and Iris Guyer on 25.

Some wise golf quotes:

“Play it as it lies” is one of the fundamental dictates of golf. The other is : “Wear it if it clashes.”

It is more satisfying to be a bad player at golf. The worse you play, the better you remember the occasional good shot.

Golf is like a love affair. If you don’t take it seriously it’s no fun; if you do take it seriously, it breaks your heart.
