The U16 Gundy Hawks travelled to Warwick on Saturday to play in the DDAFL’s first semi final against the more favoured Dalby Swans. For the players, it was the first final they had played in and if nerves were an issue, it definitely didn’t show. From the first bounce the team stamped its authority on the game with the midfield of Lachlan Smith, Myles Sheahan, Joel Barr and Walter Bell winning the ball out of the centre with ease. Assisted by the run off the wing provided by Tyson Haigel and Jens Springborg. The forward line consisted of just two players Joe Verney and Doug Bell, who had plenty of space in which to operate, though out numbered most of the time Verney and Bell still managed to create scoring opportunities from every encounter - helped brilliantly by the constant run of the mid field. Our defence was high quality with the Wes and Kody Wattus, Travis Sheahan, Don Turvey and Ben Murphy limiting every scoring opportunity that Dalby had.
Final score Goondiwindi 22.18.150 defeated Dalby 6.7.43. Goal kickers – Joe Verney 8, Walter Bell 5, Joel Barr 4, Jens Springborg 2, Myles Sheahan 1, Don Turvey 1 and Doug Bell 1.
Next game we welcome back to the side Matt Brown, Brad and Ben Ambrose and Lane Flemming who missed this week with injury. These players will be an enormous boost for the side in there final charge in the 2008 campaign.
The Hawks now play the loser of the game between Coolaroo and the undefeated powerhouse East Toowoomba at Rockville Oval in the preliminary final.
