Hawks defeat Kingaroy in fine style

15/08/2008 11:13:00 AM
On Saturday, it was Kingaroy’s turn to make the longest trip of the year to play in the DDAFL competition, with their U12s and U14s travelling to play the Goondiwindi Hawks for our last home game of the season.

Although the U12 Kingaroy Jet’s have been improving, the Hawks definitely weren’t worried about that.

Right from the first bounce the side showed they were out to make up for the mistakes of last week and did so in style - with fantastic team work and high quality skills that left many spectators amazed, when the ball was consistently repelled by the backline.

fight was lead by Brodie Colebron, Micky Wattus, Sam Baldock and Logan North. More damage occurred in the midfield with Matthew North, Ashley Hagiel, Zac Naismith, Lachlan McGregor, Dylan Politis and Jackson Lemm. They completely dominated, continually running the ball into the forward line where Kingsley Williamson, Wendy Litherland, Xander Naismith, Georgia Bourke and Isabelle Baldock converted many of our scoring opportunities into a very good score.

Best players included Matt North, Brodie Colebron and Jackson Lemm. Royal Hotel Encouragement Awards went to Ashley Hagiel, Zac Naismith, Kingsley Williamson and Wendy Litherland. Final score Goondiwindi 17.8.110 defeated Kingaroy 4.2.26. Goal kickers – Wendy Litherland 5, Zac Naismith 4, Ashley Hagiel 3, Kingsley Williamson 2 and 1 each to Dylan Politis, Matthew North and Isabelle “Crumping” Baldock.

The U14 game was a much harder game for the Hawks as Kingaroy are the in form side of the competition and are competing for second spot on the ladder.

The Hawks also had two bigger players out due too illness, so they knew it was going to be hard. But the first two quarters proved a real surprise for the Jets, with the Hawks having more scoring shots on the board and continually winning the midfield contests.

Unfortunately the Hawks inaccurate kicking, in front of goal, was damaging. At the halve time break the coaches told the players to continue going hard at the footy and to take time with their kicking at goal. But it wasn’t to be – the Hawks went back in their shell and Kingaroy started to play over to top of them and ran out winners on the day. Best players included Ashley Hagiel, Joseph Verney and Travis Sheahan. Royal Hotel Encouragement Awards went to Ben Ambrose, Dylan Politis and Tyson Hagiel. Final score Kingaroy 18.3.111 defeated the Hawks 7.9.51. Goal kickers – Joe Verney 4 and Gus McLaughlin 3.

The U16s Hawks played against the Dalby Swans who are placed third on the ladder and with a spot in the first semi final up for grabs this was going to be a very important game and a good opportunity to play the team the Hawks will most likely compete against in the final.

With the welcome return of Joel Barr, Matthew Brown and Ben Murphy, the Hawks are a formidable team.

The game was played very hard and fast with the Hawks coming away victorious with a score of 11.8.74 to 8.10.58. Best players included Myles Sheahan, Joe Verney and Bradley Ambrose. Joel Barr and Matt Brown also had good games. Joe Verney kicked 10 goals and Joel Barr kicked 1 goal.
