The Goondiwindi Hawks are about to turn 30 and they’re celebrating.
They’ll be reliving a proud history which has seen the Club win seven grand finals and play in more than double that over the past 30 seasons.
The club began in 1978 playing a number of trial matches against Toowomba teams.
In 1979 it joined a NSW north-west league before joining the Darling Downs Australian Football League in 1980.
The Hawks made a big hit in the early 80s before going on to dominate the competition in the late 80s and 90s which included back-to-back premierships in 1995 and 1996.
The club’s clashes with “old foe” Institute, who became “Uni”, were legendary and included some of the lowest grand final winning margins in DDAFL history.
After three grand finals, from 1995 to 1997, less than three kicks separated the two teams with Goondiwindi winning two and University one.
Those victories and far more will be replayed from June 27 to June 29 when ex-players and supporters from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and NSW will head back to Goondiwindi.
“It’s going to be a top weekend,” Hawks’ President Daryl Martin said.
“We’ve had more than 150 people say they are coming to the dinner on Saturday night and we’re hoping most of those and a few more will come out to the game on Saturday.
“Anyone who has ever been associated with the Club in any way is invited to join in the celebration,” he said.
For those who want an early kick-off there is a pre-game session at the Royal Hotel on Friday night.
“Kick off is when ever Murray Collett arrives,” he said. There will also be a recovery breakfast at the Royal Hotel on Sunday morning.
