The Performing Arts Goondiwindi Inc has formed a Theatre Committee to liaise with the local Councils regarding a theatre for Goondiwindi and district.
We were pleased to be included along with other interested parties in the recent community consultation meeting and put forward our ideas.
As the matter has now been raised in the press, we wish to put the following points to the wider public for consideration.
1. Goondiwindi’s Community Centre is already very successfully established at its present site.
2. A theatre addition to this site would greatly enhance the facilities already in place.
3. The existing bar and foyer area would be used in conjunction with a theatre event.
4. The kitchen facilities can be utilised as part of a theatre event for a dinner or supper on site, something which is a proven attraction for our theatre audiences.
5. Public toilet facilities already exist.
6. Parking is provided
7. Performing Arts has the existing facility of two huge and convenient storage rooms for props and costume, also easily accessed by schools upon request.
8. The multiple hall and stage areas would be an asset to community events such as the Goondiwindi Apex Eisteddfod, Gourmet in Gundy, school functions, and revenue-raising large events such as conferences.
9. The theatre courses at Goondiwindi State High School can easily access a Community Centre Theatre with little interference in daily routine.
10. A well-equipped theatre with state-of-the-art lighting and sound could be used for technical courses run by the GTT which is just across the road.
11. A theatre at the Community Centre can more adequately cater for the future with greater seating capacity possible than at the Civic which would be limited to around 200.
12. A theatre shared with a Cinema is a nightmare in the making for all involved as rehearsals and performances are at night and over weekends.
13. Theatre performances no longer always utilise a hall with a stage. A new theatre design at the Community Centre could be more creative and less restricted than at the Civic.
For example the stage could be constructed to open in two directions so that the lovely outdoor area could become an alternative seating area and the stage and step-downs used for outdoor events such as Gourmet in Gundy or our popular River Jam.
The theatre at the Community Centre has not materialised up to now because there has been no actual long-term planning for its construction and finance.
It would indeed be far costlier than the proposed $600 000 under consideration at the Civic. What is questionable is the quality, size, usefulness and adapatability of what would be achieved for that moderate sum in an already aging and compromised building.
The Councils are to be commended for seeking community consultation on this matter. Our committee urges them to make a commitment to pursue sources of finance for the design and construction of a theatre to enhance our existing Community Centre.
